Thornhill Project Summary
Click on the "Stone Pillar Water Feature" to the right to view a "Slide Show"
of a project through it's steps of progression. Here is a breakdown of what you will see.
This Thornhill property had been neglected for years; the existing walkway was crumbling apart, the plant
materials were dated and overgrown. It was our job to bring this magnificent house, designed in the style of
Frank Lloyd Wright, back to life. The owners wanted the front entrance to have a sense of drama yet be welcoming.
Working with the existing horizontal lines of the house, a number of oversized concrete platforms, dyed black
to match the front door, were designed. Graduating from the front door, they overlapped each other to eventually
spill out onto the driveway. Each one was then scored at a 45 degree angle to create a diamond pattern which
broke up the mass of concrete while also providing a sense of direction.
The plant materials were kept simple
with groupings of ornamental grasses, Sumac and Hosta which brim overtop the large Armor Stone rockery beds.
The main focal point is the water feature; three granite stone pillars, each of a different size, with water
that softly bubbles out from their tops. Art pieces are strategically placed throughout the garden to catch
your eye and at night, with the use of professional nightscape lighting, the plants and sculptures are highlighted
in such a unique way that the garden takes on a surprisingly new dimension.
The end result is a landscape that now wholly complements the architecture of the home, bringing it back to the
ageless glory it's deserving of, a landscape that harmoniously unites the various elements of light, wind, rock,
water and earth naturally together.
Since completion of the project this home has been featured as a special to the Toronto Star on October 1, 2006,
Renovating the Wright Way - Paying Homage to the Master Architect by Vicky Sanderson and was the feature home
in Home of the Week in the Globe & Mail, November 24, 2006 by Jane Gadd.
